Portugal

Portugal did not have a national league competition until 1934-35, when an experimental premier division was formed. Until then the winners of the knockout cup were considered national champions, with leagues arranged on a district basis. Unsurprisingly Os Tres Grandes  feature prominently in the lists.

* From 1922-38 this cup competition was the most prestigious, with the winners having the title ‘Champions of Portugal’.
** 1934–35 was the first season of national league football in Portugal. In a four season period leading up to the reform of 1938, and the foundation of the Primeira Divisão proper the winners were named "League champions". Teams qualified for the 8 team Primeira Liga according to their performance in the district championships.
